Another very good reason for following a liver detox diet on a regular basis and to detox your body is the methods we use to de-bug our homes and gardens. None of us want our homes to be overrun by ants, our clothes to be eaten by moths or our barbecues to be ruined by a plague of mosquitoes but, when you think about it, sprays or powders that cause insects to drop dead in their tracks cannot be doing us much good either.

Non-Toxic Bug Control

Fortunately, there are plenty of natural, non-toxic ways of dealing with common bugs in the home and garden. Try the following and see for yourself,

The herb tansy, planted in the garden, will deter ants. Indoors, pile dried mint, chilli powder or borax at strategic points.

Finely ground eggshells deter slugs in the garden

Cockroaches, moths and rodents all hate sage, so tie bunches round the home.

Burn citronella candles to deter mosquitoes when you’re sitting outside on a summer evening.

Instead of mothballs, use pieces of muslin soaked in cedarwood, camphor or lavender oil and placed around the house, especially in wardrobes.

If your cat or dog brings home fleas, vacuum the carpets and soft furnishings and wash what you can in boiling water. Spray tea tree and eucalyptus oils diluted in water onto furniture and carpets. Comb through the animal’s coat with a mixture of olive oil, mint, eucalyptus and tea tree oil, squashing or drowning fleas you comb out, then shampoo with a mild baby shampoo with a few drops of tea tree and eucalyptus mixed in.

For people with asthma associated with dust mite allergies, it’s best to remove their homes, such as wall-to-wall carpets and over-stuffed soft furnishings. To neutralize dust mites in these areas, just make a cup of very strong black tea, put it in a sprayer and spray on problem areas. (Obviously, this is not Ideal on cream sofas!)

To get rid of aphids (e.g. greenfly and blackfly), spider mites and scale mites, steep two garlic cloves in a liter of water for 24 hours, then spray all over the affected plants.

Is there an ants’ nest in your garden? If so, just pour boiling water over them. Pure lemon juice works as well but it’s better to save it for use in detox drinks and recipes.

To keep wasps away from a picnic or any outdoor meal, half-fill a tumbler with fruit juice and secure a paper lid over the top – hold it in place with a rubber band. Pierce a hole through the paper with a pencil. Wasps will crawl through, attracted by the scent of the juice, but will not be able to get out again.

If you have high cholesterol you have little choice but to try and lower it. Choosing not to do so drastically increases your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke; three medical conditions that can have a major impact on the long term outlook of your life. Fortunately getting your levels under control can be as easy as making dietary changes and eating foods to reduce bad cholesterol.

Diet is always a good place to start with just about any ailment or condition, but when it comes to lowering cholesterol the food you eat can have a large impact on how successful your attempt will be. In the end it comes down to eating healthy by following these eight steps.

1. Seafood and Omega-3s – Omega-3 fatty acids are sorely missing in our modern diet and have been shown to help lower “bad” LDL cholesterol levels while raising “good” HDL cholesterol levels. Omega-3s are found primarily in seafood with salmon being one of the best sources. You can also find it in flax seed and in supplement form.

2. Cut the Desert – If you just can’t go without eat them in moderation and choose healthier alternatives. Graham crackers, fat free frozen yogurt, and angle food cake are good cholesterol reducing choices.

3. Fiber – Is your friend. Foods that are high in fiber such as oatmeal, vegetables, beans, fruits, wheat bread, and high fiber cereals are all good choices.

4. Fruits and Vegetables – In addition to adding fiber to your diet fruits and vegetables contain no cholesterol.

5. Fried and Fast Foods – These should be avoided as much as possible. Because of their high saturated and trans-fat content these foods are nothing more then cholesterol time bombs.

6. Salad Dressing – Everyone knows that a nice salad is a healthy part of any meal. That is until you dump a bunch of high fat salad dressing on it. Read your labels carefully and select those dressings that are low in fat and cholesterol.

7. Grill or Broil your Meat – You should only eat lean cuts of meat and when you prepare them grill them on the barbecue or broil them. Cooking in this manner reduces the amount of fat in the meat and allows you to enjoy delicious meals.

8. What About Lunch – It is possible to have a healthy sandwich. Use whole wheat bread, lean turkey or chicken, and veggies. Stick to low fat cheeses and mayo or use mustard instead for a healthy delicious lunch.

The thing you will notice with these food to reduce bad cholesterol is that you are not forced to eat a bland diet. It may not be quite what you are used to but with a little time and recipe research you will soon find you don’t miss all those un-healthy foods in the first place.

This past Monday night, I was reading a network marketing forum that I occasionally go to, and there was a guy on there who had recently bought Mike Dillard’s book, Magnetic Sponsoring, but was having some difficulty with what exactly the broad concept of attraction marketing really means. It’s something that, as an overall idea, is really easy to understand but in case you may be having some difficulty with it (or if you’ve never heard of attraction marketing before), here’s a simple and quick analogy that you can use to share it with your team (not to be confused with the A-Team).

Imagine for a second that you just moved into a new house in across the country from where you currently reside. While you are hanging up some pictures, you hear a knock at the front door. When you open the door, you see a tall man standing there, with a big smile on his face, who introduces himself as your new neighbor, Jack.  After a few minutes of small talk, Jack welcomes you to the neighborhood and hands you a small gift – a container of best smelling BBQ you’ve ever seen.

Hey, I live in Texas so I couldn’t say it was a cricket paddle or something like that.

A few days later, you’re in your back yard trying to light the old gas grill you’ve had forever when you notice Jack is grilling away from across the fence.  Bobby Flay would be jealous, for sure. Jack gives you a friendly wave and asks what you have on the menu, so you tell him you got some pre-packaged burgers from the store because you can’t grill like he does. Jack laughs and says he has a pamphlet in his office: “5 Amazing Spice Rub Recipes That Will Make You A BBQ Champion” that you need to read. He gives you the brochure and you go back your pre-packaged cook out. Within a few weeks, your family is complementing you on your newly found BBQ skills.

Is it weird that I’m starting to get hungry?

Occasionally you notice that Jack is always tossing out a amazing “master tip” or “secret” on something related to grilling and BBQ, and you’ve also noticed some of your neighbors going to Jack with their grilling questions, so in the back of your mind you start to register Jack as the neighborhood “expert” on grilling.

The time comes when you’re ready to get rid of your old rusty gas grill, and you decide to pick up something that will take your new  BBQ skills to the next level. The only thing is that you’re not exactly sure what to buy and where to buy it since you’re new to town. That’s when your sub-conscious says, “ask Jack.”

So you find yourself doing what you’ve seen many of your neighbors have done and you go next door to Jack’s house hoping he can give you a few tips.

“Hey Jack, I’m looking to buy a good quality grill like you have, and I was wondering if  that you could give me an idea of where to go?” Jack smiles at you and says, “Sure.” He reaches into his front pocket, pulls out a blue business card and gives it to you.

What does the business card say? To your shock and amazement, the card reads, “Jack’s BBQ Warehouse”.

Do you see what he did here? Jack has been practicing attraction marketing from the start:

    * The BBQ as a housewarming gift
    * The pamphlet
    * The free advice
    * Teaching his neighbors to establish himself as an expert

Jack nailed the basic ideas that are talked about in Magnetic Sponsoring, and he isn’t even an internet marketer!

What if Jack had prospected you the very first day trying to tell you about his BBQ supply store?  My guess is that you might not have ever done business with him if had he tried to “prospect” you from the very beginning, or at least the relationship with him would likely have not have been the same.

Would you say that’s accurate?

The whole idea behind attraction marketing is to give real value to a qualified group of people over a period of time. When you can anchor your value as an expert in your “neighborhood” (Twitter, YouTube, Your Blog, Facebook,  etc.) by giving valuable content to your audience and allow a little bit of time to work in your favor, you will eventually standout in the mind of your target audience as a trusted expert. Once you have the PRINCIPLE mastered, it doesn’t matter what exact method you use to share your value to your audience.

Where have all the workers gone? If you don’t have a job, but you’re no longer looking for work, guess what? You’re not counted among the unemployed.  The Washington Post reports that if the same percentage of adults were in the workforce now as when Barack Obama took office, the unemployment rate would be 11.1 percent. While if you go back to when George W. Bush was sworn in, the unemployment rate would be 13.1 percent. I guess this means that if everyone stopped looking for work, Obama could claim the unemployment rate was 0.

They’re back — sort of. After hibernating most of the winter, when it was too cold to sleep in most Northern parks, the Occupy Wall Street crowd chose May 1 to announce that they were back in business. But hardly anyone paid any attention to their call for “people to refrain from shopping, walk out of class, take the day off of work and other creative forms of resistance disrupting the status quo” on the traditional communist holiday (International Workers’ Day). What say we all ignore them? That would certainly get their goat.

Too broke to declare bankruptcy? Here’s a story that had me scratching my head. CNNMoney claims that hundreds of thousands of Americans who would like to declare bankruptcy can’t afford to do so. That’s because it can cost $1,500 or more to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection. The same study estimates that 200,000 people used their tax refunds this year to pay to file for bankruptcy.

Harvard’s absurd “minority” professor. Elizabeth Warren, the Harvard Law School professor who is running for the Senate against Republican incumbent Scott Brown in Massachusetts, seems to be a little red-faced these days, if you’ll pardon the expression. It seems her claims to be part Native American are a little shaky. There’s no actual proof that her great-great-great-grandmother was a Cherokee, just “family lore.” Harvard still claims she is an example of their “minority” hiring, however.

Some say it’s one of the oldest professions, yet it garners little if any respect from most of the population notwithstanding the tradition that has been its trademark for generations:  the chivero, or slayer and preparer of goat, and its barbequing in an in-ground oven.  There are a number of other caprine cattle that are cooked in the ancient style, including ram and sheep.  Since the early nineties, here in Oaxaca the most popular / unlucky of these inhabitants of the hills has been the borrego pelibuey, a variety of sheep.

Oaxaca (wa-HAW-kah) is a colonial city tucked away in a valley surrounded by the Sierra Madre del Sur range in south central Mexico. Boasting no less than 16 indigenous cultures, it should come as no great shock that such a custom has been maintained in the state for hundreds if not thousands of years.  However the modern institution of baking a variety of meats in a pit extends far beyond Mexico, and in fact is practiced in the Caribbean, Central and South America, Hawaii, and much further abroad.  After all,  before the advent of coal, gas and electric ovens, if circumstances dictated something other than grilling over an open flame, our ancestors had little choice but to innovate in this fashion.    

What began with humankind’s Darwinian development of a simple invention of necessity has become a highly ritualized and esteemed convention.

Whether you’re traveling, visiting, working or living the life of a retiree abroad, as you  become integrated into your host society, on balance you’ll be invited to partake in at least a portion of the pomp and ceremony associated with barbacoa,  as it’s more commonly known in Mexico. 

In Oaxaca the custom is reserved for fiestas marking significant rites of passage such as key birthdays and anniversaries, and weddings.  It cuts across class lines, observance ranging from campesinos in the smallest of back road villages, to the upper class in the backyards of their luxurious homes in gated suburban communities.

While varying only minimally depending on local mores, practice begins with the purchase of the appropriate number of candidates at a private farm or livestock market…unless you’ve been raising your own.  One counts on each beast serving between about 25 and 40 people, depending on size.   Plumping them up for a few days never hurts, if you have the space and inclination. 

The chivero, frequently with associate, family member and/or young apprentice, arrives  a day before the comida (the largest meal of the day in Mexico, beginning anytime between 2 and 4 pm) to survey and give instructions before beginning.  Are the cooking vessels, additional accessories, related foodstuffs and pit appropriate for the task at hand, or will there have to be last minute purchases or adaptations?  Considerations include:  type, dimensions and quantity of leña (firewood); requisite river rocks; age, size and composition of oven; type of grate; and even sufficiency of loose soil.

The better part of that first afternoon consists of the slaughter and skinning, cutting and cleaning, with procedures marked by care and precision, right down to evacuating the inside of each and every inch of intestine with the nimblest of digital movements, akin to, and no less delicate a process than spinning yarn from raw wool.   Nothing is wasted.  Virtually every entrail, organ and liquid is gathered, prepared and set aside for later use.  No less important to the ultimate creation of a culinary coupe, parallel provisions are attended by others elsewhere in or around the home, principally the select array of vegetables is cored, cut and cubed, and herbs and seasonings sequestered.  Best to have a healthy compliment of friends and relatives on hand.  If you’re asked to attend a day early, you now know why. 

By evening the maestro is ready to begin the process of curing the oven.  One which measures roughly 3′ x  3′ x  4′ should accommodate about 4 animals for a party with upwards of 150 guests—the terracotta bricks lining the ground cavity need not have been fired to the same extent as those used in usual construction of homes, and the better view is to build the oven with minimally baked blocks.  Logs are lit by nightfall. The chivero has the option of thereafter returning home for a brief break, or napping on site until the madrugada, perhaps 2 or 3 in the morning, when he must add further firewood to ensure continued consistency of heat.  Atop this layer is strategically placed a stratum of rounded river rocks which will absorb and hold the heat pending completion of cooking. 

At about 7 am, more wood is added and allowed to burn off, but not before the skewered hearts are barbecued over the flames—a taco delicacy—and several agave or maguey leaves have been charred.  The previously prepared produce, with select innards and  water to cover, now in an oversized cast aluminum cauldron, is placed on the scorching stones, as is a mixture of large broken corn kernels with a separate set of flavorings. An iron grate containing the quartered meat including head and organs—either plain, or enchilada (spiced)—with avocado leaves and the grilled agave placed atop, is gingerly lowered onto the vegetable receptacles.  The blood, encased in stomach lining, is readied.     On top of all is placed the petate, a large mat of dried palm leaf or reed.  The subsequent coverings, at least one of which must be firm enough to withstand the weight of a final heavy layer, include one or more of a large flat grid of lengths of reinforced steel; a sheet of laminated metal; and a spread of sturdy plastic or vinyl.  For further assurance a hill of dirt is then shoveled on top of all, then compacted with the aid of a light hosing of water.  Tradition dictates that while the oven and its contents are being sealed for baking, a bottle of mezcal is placed within the mound of earth.  

From when the first match is lit, the foregoing steps are much more than mere convention.  They are carefully calculated, much in the same fashion as the most specific time and temperature stipulations contained in a difficult baking recipe in a gourmet cookbook.  However I have yet to determine the scientific roll played by the wooden cross set on the crest of the mountain of tierra firma…other than symbolic of burial.

Guests tend to arrive between 2:30 and 4:30 pm, by which time the blood has curdled to the consistency of a terrine style accompaniment, and entrée has been roasted to perfection, its juices having dripped into the casseroles thereby creating a flavorful,  vegetable and meat potage, and a thick starchy accompaniment, the corn having turned to mash aided by the meat’s juices.  At their option, at the chosen hour, males in attendance may take a shovel and aid in the unearthing of the oven, with the one encountering the piping hot bottle of mezcal—contents by then smooth to the extreme— being given the privilege of serving shotsful to others in the fraternity of assisting amigos. 

The bouillabaisse is served, followed by the most tender, savory and succulent meat imaginable, with sides of sangre and the cooked large grain, preferably to the sound of live music.  And yes, a limited number of guests are presented with the available crania having been opened so that they can scoop brain and/or eye into tortilla and top with salsa before indulging.  Care must be taken to avoid insulting one to whom a head has been promised.  At a joint birthday bash thrown with a fellow Aquarian, en route to delivering the delicacy to a comadre I wished to honor, a friend stopped me at his table and by the time I’d arrived with the prize to its ultimate destination, almost all but a bare bone skull remained.   Finally, the testicles should be offered to others worthy of special tribute.  But once again be mindful.  At that same celebration, a five-goat-affair, someone absconded with all ten testes.

Big Hearted Mitt Romney: The Man the Media Doesn’t Want You to See

Mitt Romney struggles in the ‘likability’ category throughout the United States. Regardless of what has actually happened, the latest Gallup polls show that 60% of registered voters think Obama is a likeable guy, but only 31% think the same of Romney. Romney does, however, statistically tie with Obama in the categories ‘Agrees with you on issues you care about,’ and ‘Can manage the government effectively.’ While this is only a poll, it is representative of the perception of these two candidates, and it is something the Camp Romney is certainly very aware of. But Romney has a much deeper past that many know about. I personally know many people who just say, “Romney is just a rich prick,” but TheDaily.com wrote a story published Sunday that shows a different side of the GOP nominee.

The piece simply begins:

One cold December day in the early 1980s, Mitt Romney loaded up his Gran Torino with firewood and brought it to the home of a single mother whose heat had been shut off just days before Christmas.

Years after a business partner died unexpectedly, Romney helped the man’s surviving daughter go to medical school with loans for tuition — loans he forgave when she graduated.

And in 1997, when a fellow church member’s teenage son fell seriously ill, Romney sprinted to the hospital in the dead of night, where he kept vigil with his terrified parents.

 

The Daily’s story begs the question, “Why haven’t we heard about these stories?”

Maybe it isn’t the time yet. It is possible that the Republican Party wants to wait to let these stories out when Romney is in need of a public image boost. It is also possible that they keep the stories under wraps because Romney is a devout Mormon, a religion that has a radical perception compared to many others.

Jen Psaki, a Democratic strategist and former communications staffer under Obama, told The Daily, “No one is questioning whether or not Mitt Romney has a nice family or has lived a life of success in which he’s tried to give something back. But that doesn’t matter to people who are still struggling, families that are trying to pay for college, people trying to pay for health insurance, middle class families who are trying to make ends meet. [Romney] hasn’t shown a plan to help them. That’s what voters are looking for, and he leaves a lot to be desired on that front.”

After a week of criticism over a 1965 bullying incident, Romney supporters may look to familiarize more with stories of his better deeds.

Perhaps the most famous story of Romney’s good deeds involved a missing daughter of a co-worker at Bain Capital in 1996.

Romney had received a phone call from Robert Gay, a senior partner with Bain in 1996. Gay frantically informed Romney that his daughter was missing and had last been seen in New York City. Romney immediately stopped his work with Bain to set up a ‘command center’ at a New York Hotel to help locate the teen. Days later, Gay’s daughter turned up safe at home.

It was originally thought that the teen was in danger, had been kidnapped, or near death, but those claims were not true according to friends. The girl’s former boyfriend, Doug Becker, now a pastor, did say he didn’t think Romney saved the teen, but did think “what spurred her going home was the kind of coverage it was getting, and I think [Romney] was pretty responsible for that.”

John Geer, an expert in campaign ads, told The Daily, “The real issue is that Romney has this positive aspect to his personality that hasn’t been talked about very much because of the way he appears on the trail. The public wants to know more about that, not that they necessarily want to have a beer with Romney, but they want a sense that he’s a good person.”

Romney is likely to stay quiet unless advised differently. His own son, Tagg, told The Daily, “He just thinks that’s the right way to go about it. I don’t think he’s going to change.”

Armed Environmental Police Shut Down And Guard Ice Cream Stand Over Building Permits

A Massachusetts ice cream stand was shut down last weekend by armed Environmental Police, causing the loss of 13 high-school and college students’ jobs.

The stand, owned and operated by Mark Duffy for the past 26 years in Great Brook Farm State Park, was shut down for making improvements to the building without the proper permission. According to the Lowell Sun, Duffy has made “countless improvements to the farm over the years without permission.” He told the Lowell Sun, “The reason I’m here and the purpose of having me here is to improve the facility and operate a commercial dairy farm.”

Edward Lambert, the commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Recreation, said the stand closed because construction was proceeding without local or state permits. “I like ice cream as much as anybody, so it pains us to even temporarily close what is an iconic property, but we have to make sure people eating ice cream there are safe,” Lambert said.

The improvements to the building were to “create an area to show an instructional video produced by the Massachusetts dairy industry.”

Duffy said armed Environmental Police showed up Friday evening of Mother’s Day weekend to shut down the stand, and even stood guard throughout the weekend to turn away customers.
